The plan is to reread all of Stephen King’s works in the order that they were published. Richard Chizmar of Cemetery Dance had the vision. I’m doing it because I am a writer and I want to improve my fiction. And I love Stephen King. I think there is something to be learned through this process. As Richard Chizmar and Bev Vincent put up their posts on the official site, I will link those in the corresponding ones of mine on this blog, typically with the “After” posts.
You can also go back to the beginning and read Before Carrie or any of my other posts up through this one and beyond by checking out this link to the Master List of all my #StephenKingRevisited posts.
Let’s take a look …
I didn’t even know this book existed before I started this Stephen King Revisited journey. I have a later illustrated edition with a warning about not uploading it to the Internet which I’m sure wasn’t included in the 1980’s printings of the story.
My understanding is that this was a project agreed to while drunk at a convention. A lot of writing careers could be explained that way. The calendar set-up looks interesting. I suppose Silver Bullet is based on Cycle of the Werewolf, but I haven’t seen that film either.
I anticipate reading this in one day, so I’ll probably be sitting down again shortly to write the After Cycle of the Werewolf post right behind this one. It’s an odd thing to read a King work in one sitting. I read in On Writing that he tries to read through the first edit pass on his work in one sitting, but I can’t imagine that being possible for any of his novels.
I picture this as a side project he did, but he’s Stephen King, so even those are something to behold in his catalog. Much like the novellas that made up Different Seasons. I think some of his best work, maybe the best work of many authors, come when they try something to break the mold for themselves and their genres.
We’ll see how that plays out in Cycle of the Werewolf. My next post will be After Cycle of the Werewolf which you will find linked on the Master List of all my Stephen King Revisited posts.
