The plan is to reread all of Stephen King’s works in the order that they were published. Richard Chizmar of Cemetery Dance had the vision. I’m doing it because I am a writer and I want to improve my fiction. And I love Stephen King’s stories. I think there is something to be learned through this process.
You can also go back to the beginning and read Before Carrie or any of my other posts up through this one and beyond by checking out this link to the Master List of all my #StephenKingRevisited posts.
As I get ready to read Song of Susannah, I’m concerned going forward through these books. There is a part of me that even as I get used to the story within stories format of these novels, I fear that the concluding volumes may not live up to my expectations for this series. I’ve technically been reading them since I was in high school. The mythology around them is already writ large, and I’ve had decades to raise the narratives up even higher as they play out in my imagination between readings.
I’m trying to clear myself of these influences and to simply enjoy the books as a reader.
That’s tough to do because everything is context and laced with emotional meaning now.
I’m more hopeful after finishing Wolves of the Calla. We have a mystery around a particular character. Everything hinges on the choices ahead and we have momentum coming out of the last book. We’ll need to cross between worlds to protect the Tower. That’s got to be fun.
I try now to read Song of Susannah with an open heart.
My next post in this series will be After Song of Susannah which will be linked on the Master List of all my Stephen King Revisited posts.
